Commercial Towing & Assistance
Commercial Towing & Assistance
Towing & Assistance coverage reimburses you for the costs that you incur when you need emergency assistance for your boat, and you and your boat are not in immediate danger. Some examples of emergency services that you may need which may be covered include: towing to a place where repairs can be made; delivery of fuel, oil or parts; assistance in the event of running aground; or emergency labor while underway. Again, there are several different towing policies available so check carefully on what you are covered for. Many towing companies begin charging the customer at the time they leave port, so sometimes it pays to have more coverage as a towing bill can increase quickly.

Oil Spill Liability
Oil Spill Liability
The cost of responding to and cleaning up after a fuel or oil spill can be staggering. Many boaters don't anticipate this issue until their vessel sinks and it causes a spill. Commercial vessels routinely carry this insurance and many recreational boaters have added it as well.

Personal Property
Personal Property
Personal Property coverage covers items such as clothing, personal effects, or fishing equipment belonging to you or your family while those items are being packed on or off your boat, and while aboard your boat. Like physical damage coverage, each company handles personal property differently so it is important to do some research into your policy.

Physical Damage Insurance (Hull & Machinery)
Physical Damage Insurance (Hull & Machinery)
Physical damage coverage generally pays for repairs to your boat that are necessary as a result of damage caused by a wide range of perils. The best policies provide "all risk" coverage, which means that if the cause of loss is not specifically excluded, it is covered. Typical causes of loss that are covered include: weather-related perils such as wind, rain, hail, lightning and wave action; fire; loss or damage caused by theft or vandalism; and collisions with docks, submerged or floating objects or other boats. It is wise to select a policy that continues to cover your boat while it is stored on land, or while you transport your boat over land by trailer.
The boat owner has the responsibility to maintain their boat, and so normal wear and tear is often excluded under a boat or yacht policy. The number and type of physical damage exclusions vary from company to company, so take the time to compare to avoid surprises later.

Protection & Indemnity
Protection & Indemnity
Protection and indemnity insurance, commonly known as P&I, is a form of marine insurance provided by a P&I Club. A P&I Club is a mutual (i.e. co-operative) insurance association that provides cover for its members, who will typically be ship-owners, ship-operators or demise charterers. Unlike a marine insurance company, which is answerable to its shareholders, a P&I Club is the servant only of its members.
Both P&I Clubs and conventional marine insurers are governed by the provisions of the Marine Insurance Act 1906. Marine insurers provide cover for known quantifiable risks, mainly Hull & Machinery insurance for shipowners, and Cargo Insurance for cargo owners. By contrast, P&I Clubs provide insurance cover for broader indeterminate risks, such as third party liabilities that marine insurers are loath to cover. Third party risks include a carrier’s liability to a cargo-owner for damage to cargo, a ship’s liability after a collision, environmental pollution and war risk insurance; (although some marine insurers are also prepared to cover war risks).
